Khamzt Chimaev is eager. Maybe too eager. Earlier this week, Sweden's Chechyna-born, rising UFC star took to Twitter to antagonize former UFC Welterweight contender Colby Covington. But in all fairness, Chimaev's not been shy about issuing challenges -- including one to former UFC Champ, Daniel Cormier in the form of an amateur wrestling match. He actually received a response from the man himself. Like it or not, Khamzat Chimaev is gaining momentum.
In all fairness, Colby has a lot more to offer than Khamzat. One thing we learned at UFC 268: Usman vs Covington 2, was that Colby Covington is the second best welterweight in the world. Although Colby's stated publicly he's willing to take a fight with Chimaev, coaching The Ultimate Fighter against former friend and teammate, Jorge Masvidal appears to be his priority. Hard to blame him. True grudge matches in MMA are rare, and this fight has the potential to be the biggest fight we've seen in recent memory.
One more challenge to Chimaev vs Covington is Dana White. Dana made it clear he thinks Khamzat needs more experience in the Octagon before facing a top 5 welterweight. It's entirely possible the Chimaev is ready today. Rushing a fighter at this level is always risky, but when it happens, it's a great time to be an MMA fan.
When I asked you guys on my YouTube community page if you'd like to see Chimaev vs Covington next, your response was overwhelming....
Max Holloway proved that even if you to the Champ twice, one final shot at redemption is possible. Make no mistake, Colby's eyes are still on the top prize. He goes to sleep each night planning his way back to a UFC Welterweight title opportunity. If he believes Chimaev is the pathway to a third crack at Usman, he just might say yes...
